How to Apply

Student Eligibility:

This program is open to undergraduate students who meet all of the following requirements:

1.       Currently enrolled at a community college in California

2.       Over 18 years of age by start of program and not enrolled in high school at the time of application

3.       A US citizen or permanent resident

4.       Majoring or intends to major in science, engineering, social science or mathematics

5.       Has satisfied the following course/unit requirements: (1 semester unit = 1.5 quarter units)

  • Completed or currently enrolled in a minimum of 4 semester units of Calculus
  • Completed a minimum of 12 semester units in science and/or engineering courses for internships with California NanoSystems Institute
  • Completed a minimum of 12 semester units in science, engineering, and/or social sciences for internships with Center for Nanotechnology in Society

Please note: Students who have already completed a bachelors degree in a science, engineering, mathematics or technical field are NOT eligible to apply.

The Application:

In addition to filling out an application form, please be prepared to submit:

1. A statement of interest (max 8,000 characters), which should address the following items:

  • Your interest in pursuing a bachelor's degree in your chosen major
  • Your educational background and achievements
  • If applicable, information on barriers (educational, social, and/or cultural) you may have experienced and a discussion of how you overcame them. If appropriate, include a discussion of your family's educational background, indicating whether your family members experienced barriers in higher education, whether you are the first person in your family to go to college, and whether you have experienced a lack of role models or informational resources about higher education and careers.
  • If applicable, information on your participation in undergraduate achievement programs (ex. CAMP, MESA, SACNAS) or student organizations
  • Any additional information, which you feel is relevant to your unique personal or educational history.
  • TIP: Prepare your statement of interest ahead of time and make sure it is well written, less than 8,000 characters, and contains all the requested information. You may want to prepare it as a Word document and then cut and paste into the textbox.

  2. Unofficial college transcripts (in pdf format, less than 3MB)

If you have transcripts from more than one institution, you can upload each file separately. Each file must be a PDF less than 3MB.

  3. the email address of 1 (max 2) recommenders

One letter of recommendation is required, but up to two may be submitted. The letter should be written by someone who is familiar with your scientific skills (e.g., faculty advisor, course instructor, or employer). All letters must be submitted online by the letter writer and are due by the application deadline. You will be asked to provide the email address of your recommender(s) during your application: we will then send them a link to the appropriate site. If you wish to expedite the process, you can send them this link to the recommendation site (but you will still have to enter their emails during your application).

Note that eligible students must be 18 years of age by the start date of the program and not enrolled in high school during the 2014-2015 academic year. Priority will be given to students with no prior research experience. We will provide university housing or a housing stipend. Priority for university housing will be given to students outside of local areas.
